Thermography 101

Thermographic Assessment

When it comes to inspecting your walls & ceilings, we have come a long way from simple stud finders. Using our infrared thermographic cameras takes your wall & ceilings inspections to a whole new level. With this advanced technology, we can accurately locate wiring, pipes, ducts, drainage lines, and more—without opening walls.

Infra-red thermography is one of the most advanced technologies used in modern building diagnostics.

It allows us to:

  • Detect hidden moisture behind walls
  • Identify structural weaknesses
  • Locate leaks and insulation gaps
  • Reveal issues not visible to the naked eye

THE SCIENCE BEHIND THERMOGRAPHY

 Everything Emits Infrared Radiation

Every object above absolute zero (-273°C) emits infrared radiation (IR).

  • Warm objects → emit more IR
  • Cold objects → emit less IR

The thermal camera doesn’t “see through walls”
It detects surface temperature differences

The Camera Converts Heat Into an Image

Infrared cameras (like FLIR) use sensors to detect radiation in the 8–14 micrometer wavelength range.

Then they:

  1. Measure IR energy
  2. Convert it into temperature data
  3. Display it as a color image (thermogram)

Typical colors:

  • 🔵 Blue = cooler areas
  • 🔴 Red/Yellow = warmer areas

Why Moisture Shows Up ?

Moisture changes how materials behave thermally.

Two main reasons:

A) Evaporative Cooling

  • Wet materials lose heat faster due to evaporation
  • They appear cooler (blue/purple) on thermal images

B) Thermal Mass Difference

  • Water holds heat differently than dry materials
  • Wet areas heat and cool slower

Heat Transfer Mechanisms

Thermography works because of how heat moves:

🔁 Conduction

Heat moving through solid materials (drywall, studs)

🌬️ Convection

Air movement (drafts, leaks, insulation gaps)

☀️ Radiation

Energy emitted from surfaces (what the camera detects)
